Moderation is always a good idea. Moderation in wine drinking is a good idea that may extend your life and improve your health. The most important word in that sentence, though, is moderation. The amount of wine recommended by major health authorities is quite small — a small glass of wine, or even half a glass of wine — is what has been shown to be beneficial. To those of you out there who tend to overdo, having 3-4 glasses of wine one night a week, even though this averages out to half a glass of wine a day, is not beneficial. Incidentally, drinking four or more servings of alcohol a day would put you in the category of “excessive” drinker, and there are no studies that have shown excessive drinking results in good health.
If you tend to not drink at all, or you can not drink for other reasons (religion, allergies, etc), there is no reason to take up wine drinking, or to think you are somehow compromising your health by not having the occasional small glass of wine. If you want some of the benefits of wine without the wine itself, drink some green tea or eat more fresh greens and raw vegetables.
